The city gets its name from the Malayalam word thiru-anantha-puram meaning the "City of Lord Ananta". Anantha is the serpent Shesha on whom Padmanabha or Vishnu reclines. The name derives from the deity of the iconic Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple of Vishnu reclining onAnantha .
This temple is estimated to be the richest in the world with asset value of close to US$15 billion. The city was officially referred to as Trivandrum until 1991, when the Kerala government decided to reinstate the city's original name.
